The DuckDuckGo browser is now available for the Mac. So far in the form of a beta version

The famous privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo is finally available for macOS as a full-fledged browser.

The developers yesterday announced the launch of a beta version of DuckDuckGo for Mac, with a Windows version coming later.

Like our mobile app, DuckDuckGo for Mac is an all-in-one privacy solution for everyday browsing without complicated settings, just for convenient personal use

Using an app designed to protect your privacy by default not only reduces invasive tracking, but also speeds up browsing and eliminates many everyday nuisances, such as cookie consent pop-ups. Here’s what you need to know:

  • DuckDuckGo for Mac provides privacy by default. With one download you get our built-in private search engine, powerful tracker blocker, new cookie popup protection on about 50% of sites, Fire button (one-click data cleanup), email protection and more – all for free. No complicated privacy settings, just simple protection that works by default.
  • DuckDuckGo for Mac works really fast! Using your computer’s built-in web rendering engine (the same as Safari) and blocking trackers before they load (unlike all major browsers), you get really fast performance. We’re already ahead of Chrome in some graphical performance metrics (using the Motion Mark 1.2. test), and as an added benefit, by blocking trackers, DuckDuckGo uses about 60% less data than Chrome!
  • DuckDuckGo for Mac is built for security. Our built-in smart encryption ensures that you’re more likely to go to an encrypted (HTTPS) version of the website, and blocking our tracker means less exposure to third-party scripts that might try to access your data. And we design our product so that data in the app, such as history, bookmarks, and passwords, are only stored locally on your device by default and are not accessible by DuckDuckGo

To become a member of the beta test, you need to download the mobile browser for iPhone and join a private waiting list in its settings.
