According to Izvestia, Roskomnadzor suspected the American service SpeedTest of violating Russian legislation on personal data. Therefore, SpeedTest may be blocked in Russia.
Roskomnadzor sent a request to SpeedTest developer Ookla LLC demanding information about the localization of personal data bases of Russians. According to the requirements of Russian law, the operator is obliged to store it on the territory of Russia. Otherwise, the company faces a fine of up to 6 million rubles.
The lack of localization of databases in Russia is fraught for SpeedTest not only with fines, but also with being blocked. The service has Russian analogues, but they are not that well-known to a wide audience.

SpeedTest has a monthly global audience of over 100 million users, with Russia in third place. The information the service collects can allegedly be used by spammers, fraudsters, blackmailers or foreign intelligence services.
