Ivars Abolins, head of the Latvian National Electronic Media Council, has confirmed that Russian social networks VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and Moi Mir will be blocked in the country next week due to European Union sanctions.
These social networks will be blocked, according to Ivars Abolins, because they are owned and controlled by Yuri Kovalchuk and Vladimir Kiriyenko. These people were previously sanctioned by the European Union because of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.
“VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and My World are part of the VK holding company. Vladimir Kiriyenko took over VK in December 2021; he is the son of Sergey Kiriyenko, first deputy head of the Russian presidential administration.
VK is also controlled by Gazprom-Media and the Sogaz insurance group, whose assets are owned by Yuri Kovalchuk.
