Russian Mikron plans to double production, but it will not cover Russian demand for semiconductors

Zelenograd-based Mikron plans to double production of silicon wafers to produce 180-90 nm chips (from 3,000 to 6,000 per month) by 2025. The company needs about 10 billion rubles to implement the project.

“Mikron is Russia’s only producer of semiconductors for civilian electronics in topology up to 130 nm. The others, such as Angstrem, manufacture products mainly for the military-industrial complex using 600 nm technology. The revenue of Mikron in 2021 was 5.69 billion rubles with net profit of 257 million rubles. At the same time, the company received state support in the amount of 687 million rubles.

The company expects to receive 10 billion rubles within the framework of the national project for the development of electronics until 2030, which is being developed now. The project has already been sent to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which declined to comment. The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that under current conditions the need to expand the capacity is understandable: “The demand is ensured through the reorientation of consumers to Russian solutions in the segments of labeling, identification, chip cards and other products. Mikron and Sistema declined to comment.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Mikron found itself fully loaded with orders from Russian companies. But the company’s capacity is no longer sufficient. For example, at full load, Mikron is capable of producing 10-13 million bank card chips a year, while the need for them “may reach tens of millions.

Theoretically, chips on 130-90 nm topologies could be produced by NM-Tech Ltd. (100% owned by VEB.RF, authorized capital 94 billion rubles). In 2023, another 3,000 wafers per month could be launched at the new site.

But experts note that even if these plans are implemented, the capacity of Mikron and NM-Tech will not be enough to cover Russia’s demand for semiconductors. This would require production of at least 30,000 wafers per month.
