Is Nintendo Switch 2 or Switch Pro on the way? The company touched on the new console for the first time, without denying work on it

Nintendo seems to be at the point where it no longer makes sense to completely deny work on a new game console. Recall that the company has previously claimed, in one form or another, that we shouldn’t expect a Switch successor anytime soon.

But now the rhetoric has changed a bit. First, in an interview with Bloomberg, the head of the company, Shuntaro Furukawa, refused to comment on a conditional Switch Pro or Switch 2. And later, during a round of investor Q&As, he admitted that the smooth transition to the next-gen console is a serious concern for Nintendo.

The question of whether we can transition from the Nintendo Switch to next-generation hardware as smoothly as we can is a major concern for us. Based on our experience with the Wii, Nintendo DS, and other hardware, it’s pretty clear that one of the main obstacles is how easy it is to transition from one hardware to another. To mitigate this risk, we are focused on building long-term relationships with our customers. While we will continue to release new software for the Nintendo Switch, we will also provide services that also use Nintendo accounts and other non-gaming software intellectual property. We intend to do this to make a lasting impact on our customers

Thus, we can’t say anything specific about the new console from this statement, but we can highlight a number of aspects. First, this is the first time Nintendo has directly talked about the Switch successor in this vein. Secondly, for some reason, the company is worried about the transition process to the next generation. Perhaps because the new console will be many times more productive. Third, it appears that the new console will be a successor to Switch, rather than another complete reimagining of the console, and Nintendo will try to keep the existing ecosystem.

Furukawa also noted that the company recently unveiled only part of its plans for the new fiscal year, meaning we’ll probably learn something about the new console in the foreseeable future.
