Cheap Netflix with ads could launch next year

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings gave a little more detail about plans for a new version of the service with ads during an investor call after the release of the financial report. Such a version could be available as early as next year.

Those who have followed Netflix know that I’m against the complexity of advertising and am a big fan of the simplicity of subscriptions. I’m a big fan of consumer choice. I want to let users who would like a lower price and tolerate advertising get what they want.

According to Reed Hastings, the company will be working on a new version of Netflix’s streaming service with ads over the next year or two.

We previously reported that Netflix reported a loss of 200,000 customers in the first quarter and now expects to lose 2 million subscribers this quarter. The company’s stock is down 26% and its market capitalization is down $40 billion.
